An Exp. 8 castle is a token/tile placed across two tiles, so it is off-grid. It is a separate feature from the tiles it sits across. It is not part of a tile like a German castle.

HiG decided that Exp. 8 castles and German castles work in different ways. It is their call.

Along the years, HiG updated their rules: even the teacher could be eaten by the dragon, but HiG finally changed their mind and decided the school could not be affected by the dragon.

Don't try to find a consistent body of rules. HiG has been putting together their rules as new ideas and expansions were added to the Cacassonne rules. Double-sized tiles have been a very troublesome addition for years. And it seems that at last there is some coherence to them after 1/2021. You can even see how HiG updated the rules of Markets of Leipzig from 2017 to handle long roads consistently with Wonders of Humanity in 2023. Things like this may continue to happen, just try to be open to it.

>> Exp. 8 castles:

  • Cannot be affected by the dragon placed on any of the tiles overlapped by the castle token.
  • The fairy in the castle does not protect the tiles overlapped by the castle token.

>> German castles:

  • The double-sized tile is affected by the dragon as soon as it lands on any of its two halves (the dragon will follow he grid when moving)
  • The fairy protects the whole double-sized tile when placed next to any meeple on it.
