Expansion symbol

Circs i artistes was released by HiG for the third edition, known as C3.1 for short, in 2025. This edition includes more detailed graphics than previous versions and cities with clipped buildings.

It includes 20 land tiles, one of them a river tile. All in all, this expansion introduces the following new elements:

• Acrobat sites, a new feature where players can build acrobat pyramids with up to 3 meeples, which can be scored.
• Circus sites, a new feature where the circus stops to do performances.
• Big top, a neutral figure that marks the current location of the circus.
• Performance tokens, placed under the big top. They indicate the number of points to grant nearby meeples.
• Ringmistress, a new type of meeple that grants extra points nearby circus and acrobat sites.

Expansion background This expansion is a revised version of El circ released for the second edition, known as C2 for short, in 2017. It was never released for the first edition, known as C1 for short. The original version was slightly different, including 20 land tiles (and no river tile), 16 tokens with the same values but the theme revolved around animals, the big top and the ringmistress meeples (previously called ringmasters). The tile distribution was quite similar but with some variations. The original edition didn't include additional standard meeples.

Hand each player the ringmistress and the 2 standard meeples in their color. Shuffle the performance tokens and place them face down next to the playing area as a general supply.

If you are playing with the mini-expansion  El riu, shuffle the new river tile into the usual river tiles.

Shuffle the rest of the new land tiles into the other land tiles.

Each new game element is explained in relation to the 3 actions:

Circus site, performance tokens & big top

      

3. Puntuar un element

Placing performance token and the big top If you placed a tile with a circus site, first resolve all scoring as usual. After that place a random performance token from the general supply face down on the circus site (without looking at it). Then, take the big top from its current location (initially from next to the playing area) and place it on that performance token. The performers are preparing the show.

Example 1: You have placed a tile with a circus site and placed a meeple on the city.
Now you place a randomly drawn performance token face down on the circus site and place the big top on top of it.

Scoring a performance token

When you place another tile with a circus site later in the game, first resolve the usual scoring. Then place a new performance token on the circus site and the big top on top of it. The previously occupied performance token is now uncovered. Reveal the number on it and score it immediately.

Example 2: You have placed another tile with a circus site. You score the completed road as usual (3 points for Blue).
Then you place a new performance token, move the big top on top of it, and reveal the uncovered performance token. It is the knife thrower (4).

All players now score points for their own meeples standing on the land tile with the revealed performance token and all directly and diagonally adjacent land tiles. Your meeples marvel at the performance.

For each of your own meeples you score the number of points shown on the revealed performance token.

Example 3: A knife thrower (4) is scored. You and Blue each score 2 x 4 = 8 points. Blue scores no points for the meeple on the road, as it is not on one of the adjacent tiles.
Yellow scores 1 x 4 points.

Note: Abbots, ringmistresses, and acrobats (see Acrobat site) also count as meeples.

Important: When scoring a performance token, no meeple are removed!

Puntuació final

In the final scoring, you first remove the big top and score the performance token underneath. Only after that you resolve all other scoring.

Acrobat site

2. Posar un seguidor

You may place a meeple on the tile you just placed as usual. The acrobat site also gives you the option to place a standard meeple as an acrobat. To do this, place it on one of the two depicted spaces.

Example 4: You have placed a tile with an acrobat site. Instead of placing a meeple on the road or field, you decide to place it as an acrobat on one of the two spaces of the acrobat site.

There is another way to place acrobats on the acrobat site:
If, in a later turn, you place a land tile directly or diagonally adjacent to an acrobat site, you may place an acrobat on it instead of on the tile you just placed.

Up to 3 acrobats, even of different colors, may be placed on the same acrobat site.

Example 5: Placing acrobats on an adjacent tile:

1. You have placed a tile. Instead of placing a meeple on it, you place a standard meeple on the diagonally adjacent acrobat site.
2. In a later turn, Blue also places a tile adjacent to the acrobat site and places a third meeple there.

When 2 acrobats stand on one site, place them side by side on the two depicted spaces. If a 3rd acrobat is added, place it on the "shoulders" of the other two. This completes the acrobat pyramid, and no further acrobats may be added.

Example 6: This acrobat pyramid is complete. No further meeples may currently be placed on this acrobat site.

If you have placed a tile directly or diagonally to multiple acrobat sites, you may choose one to place a meeple on.

3. Puntuar un element

Only when 3 acrobats together form a pyramid may you score them. However, you do not score an acrobat pyramid immediately after its completion.
After all, the acrobats want to show off their skills for a while.

Scoring an acrobat pyramid

If, in a later turn, you do not place a meeple during 2. Posar un seguidor, and do not return your abbot instead, you may proceed to 3. Puntuar un element and score 1 completed acrobat pyramid of your choice. At least 1 of your meeples must participate in this pyramid. When scoring a pyramid, all players who are participating in it score 5 points per meeple of their color.

Example 7: In your turn, you did not place a meeple and decide to score this acrobat pyramid. For this pyramid, you score 2 x 5 = 10 points and Blue scores 1 x 5 points.

Example 8: For this acrobat pyramid, you, Blue and Yellow each score 5 points.

After scoring the pyramid, take back your scored meeple. Then resolve all scoring as usual and finally move the Big Top if necessary.

You may place new acrobats on an acrobat site after a pyramid has been scored on it.

Puntuació final

In the final scoring, you score 5 points for each of your own acrobats, regardless of how far the pyramid is built.

The ringmistresses

2. Posar un seguidor

Instead of a standard meeple, you may place your ringmistress meeple on the tile you just placed. You may place her on a road, a city, a monastery or lying down on a field.

3. Puntuar un element

If a feature with your ringmistress was completed, you score points as usual. When determining majorities, the ringmistress counts as 1 standard meeple (it has a strength of 1). Additionally, you score 2 points for each circus site and acrobat site on the tile of your ringmistress and the tiles directly or diagonally adjacent to it (including the site underneath the big top).

Example 9: You have completed a road with a ringmistress and score 3 points for it as usual. Your ringmistress stands on a tile with an acrobat site, and another tile with a circus site is diagonally adjacent to it. For these 2 sites you additionally score 4 (2x2) points. The newly placed tile does show a circus site but is not adjacent to the ringmistress and therefore does not score any points.

Puntuació final

In the final scoring, you score the ringmistress like a standard meeple.
Additionally, you score 2 points per circus site and acrobat site on her tile and the tiles directly and diagonally adjacent to it.

Peces de territori especials

Both circus sites and acrobat sites are closed ends for the roads. They also separate fields.

General comments:

When your ringmistress lies on a field in the final scoring, she is considered a farmer. She is not considered a farmer, traveler, knight or monk during the game.

Exp. 1 ‒ Fondes i catedrals

You may not place your large meeple as an acrobat.
When scoring a performance token, your large meeple is taken into account.

Exp. 2 ‒ Comerciants i constructors

You may not assign your builder or pig to your ringmistress.
When scoring a performance token, your builder or pig do not score extra points.

Exp. 3 ‒ El drac i la fada

The dragon may remove ringmistresses but may not remove the Big Top or performance tokens.
You may assign the fairy to an acrobat even if it stands on top of an acrobat pyramid. In order to assign the fairy to your acrobat you might have to rearrange the pyramid so your meeple stands on the bottom. Then, place the fairy next to it.
During a dragon movement, if the dragon enters a tile with several acrobats, one of which is protected by the fairy, the fairy itself and the corresponding acrobat are not removed. However, all other acrobats on this tile are removed.
You may place a standard meeple on any acrobat site via the magic portal.
You may place your ringmistress via the magic portal according to the usual rules.
The scoring of acrobats does not trigger the fairy bonus. (10/2025)

Exp. 4 ‒ Torres i lladres

When scoring a performance token, watchmen on towers are taken into account.

Exp. 5 ‒ Emissaris i alcaldes

You may not place your mayor, messenger or scarecrow as an acrobat.
When scoring a performance token, mayors, messengers and scarecrows are taken into account.
Acrobat sites and circus sites count as junctions with regard to your messenger's movement.
You may not use a mayor's ability to replace a ringmistress. You can only replace standard meeples. (10/2025)

Exp. 6 ‒ Tornejos i blasons

You may not nominate your ringmistress.
When scoring a performance token, nominated meeples are taken into account as usual.
If you won a prize and have a prize tile in front of you, you draw a land tile as usual. If that land tile depicts a circus site, you resolve 1. Col·locar una peça de territori as usual. Only in 3. Puntuar un element do you resolve the circus site (as stated in the rules).

Exp. 7 ‒ Setges i fortaleses

You must not place a standard meeple at the defense post as a consequence of placing your ringmistress.
You must not remove your ringmistress as a consequence of an attack.
When scoring a performance token, meeples placed at defense posts are ignored and not scored.

Exp. 8 ‒ Castells i ponts

When your ringmistress lies on a field, she is not considered a farmer during the game but only in the final scoring. Thus, you may not place her on a barn.
You may place a bridge on a tile with a circus site or acrobat site. Bridges do not stand in the way of other figures. If figures would physically collide, just place them in a way that they all fit on the land tile.
You may place your ringmistress on a bridge.
When scoring a performance token, meeple on bridges are taken into account. However, maidens or farmers on barns do not score points. They are inside their building and cannot see the performance.

Exp. 9 ‒ Vinyes i ovelles

When scoring a performance token, your shepherd meeple is taken into account.
