Cliff and Waterfalls adds breathtaking scenery and new tactical layers as you build around towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Cliffs divide fields, adding tactical depth and creating new ways to outsmart opponents. Perfect for both seasoned players and newcomers, this expansion keeps the fun of the base game while introducing fresh challenges!
Some of the rivers around Carcassonne feature magnificent waterfalls crashing down over great rocky outcrops into deep, dark, pools, throwing up plumes of spray that can be seen for miles.
Rocky outcrops may once have been the location of a fortress or religious site, visible from the lands all around. Over time a city may have grown around it, and the cliff-top site adapted to be dominated by a classic Church or Monastery, or Lord’s Castle.
Simple rocky outcrops may also be found in the countryside, making life difficult for those who build the roads, or who wish to farm the land.

Cliffs
1. Placing a tile
Place the tile according to normal tile placement rules.
3. Scoring a feature
Waterfalls
1. Placing a tile
The waterfall tile must be placed to conform to natural geographic logic – an arrow is printed on each river to show the direction of flow, and this must be towards the river end (be that Lake, or River Mouth) or away from the Source. If, for some reason, the tile cannot be legally placed, it should be discarded and a replacement tile drawn.
2. Placing a meeple
You may place a meeple according to the usual rules.
3. Scoring a feature
Waterfalls do not affect scoring during the game.
New land tiles
The new Land tiles are played like those in the base game.
A number of tiles feature sections of cliff that link two corners of the tile. If a section of cliff on one tile connects with a section of cliff, or city walls, in the corner of an adjacent tile, then there is no way through for a farmer’s field.
This tile should be treated as any other full City tile. The Castle, itself, has no special function, other than making the tile more important to the scoring of the City where it is placed (by the presence of the two pennants.
A meeple may be placed on the City as a knight or on the Monastery as a monk.
Most of the Cliffs on these tiles do not block access to a City from the field (for scoring of farmers at the end of the game), as the line of cliffs stops, allowing the field to touch part of the City walls. However, there are tiles – where the cliffs do block farmer access to the City from one of the fields on that tile.
The two city segments are linked by a bridge over the gorge; the city at the top of the tile will count for a farmer in the field on the left-hand side of the road, but not in the field on the right-hand side of the road.
The waterfall tile must be placed to conform to natural geographic logic – an arrow is printed on each river to show the direction of flow, and this must be towards the river end (be that Lake, or River Mouth) or away from the Source. If, for some reason, the tile cannot be legally placed, it should be set aside, and a replacement tile drawn.
Other Expansions
Cliff on corners of tile divide fields into two different parts in different level. For some expansions it can be a limitation for placement of corner-like figures.
