In the old days, there were only two ways of preserving meat: smoking and salting. Some of the fish caught is smoked to ensure year-round availability, usually out in small fish-smoking huts. With over-fishing, some of the fish smokers are diversifying and now produce other smoked products – smoked ham and venison are the most common.

Fishermen Variant

Fish Huts requires a copy of an expansion Fishermen Fishermen.

Rules

Preparation

River Variant

This expansion is to be played together with other River tiles. Shuffle the 12 river tiles together with the rest of the river tiles. You may wish to use the river source and lake tiles to replace those in The River, or as alternative river ends.

Note: After removing the source and lake tiles, there may still be too many Fish Hut river tiles to be used with the 12 tiles of The River in a single game, so a random selection of no more than 6 is suggested. If you are using a larger number of river tiles, then you may wish to include all of the Fish Hut tiles.

Fishermen Variant

When playing with Fishermen Fishermen shuffle the Fish Huts tiles together with the land tiles of the basic game.

Note: The original version of Fish Huts was intended to be used with the Fishermen fan expansion of 60 additional river tiles, and other similar fan expansions.

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

Whenever you draw a tile, place it normally.

2. Placing a meeple

You may place a meeple according to the usual rules.

2. Placing a meeple

When a tile with a fish-smoking hut is placed, you may place a meeple according to the usual rules. A meeple can also be placed to the fish-smoking hut as a poissonnier (French for a person whose job is to prepare fish).

3. Scoring a feature

When a fish-smoking hut has tiles on all four corners, it is completed. The player who has a poissonnier on the fish-smoking hut immediately scores 7 points, plus a bonus of 2 extra points for each River tile and Pigty tile in fish-smoking hut corner tiles. Check also options in dynamic table by your expansions.

The poissonnier is removed after the points are scored and is returned to the player's supply.

Example: When the fish hut is completed (i.e. when it has 4 tiles at its corners), Red scores 7 points for the hut plus 2 extra bonus points for any river tiles in the corners. With two river tiles at the corners (top right and bottom right), Red scores 4 bonus points, for 11 points total. The river tiles to the left and right of the hut do not contribute to the scoring.

Final Scoring

At the end of the game, if a fish-smoking hut is not completed, no points are scored for the poissonnier on the hut.

New land tiles

Fish-smoking Hut: represented by a hut, a pier and two lines of fish hanging in the sun to dry. There may be an additional small building, ground smoker or boats, to provide artistic variation. A meeple may be placed here as a poissonnier.
