1. Placing a tile

Magicians C31 Feature Figures.png

If you place a tile with a magic symbol, place it as usual. Then, you must take 1 of the magic figures of your choice from it current location (sometimes next to the play area) and place it on any incomplete city or road. [1] [2] However, you may never place a magic figure on a feature with the other magic figure on it. Also you may never place it on the same feature that you took it from. [3] [4]

If you were to place either magic figure, but there are no eligible features, you must remove one of them from their feature and place it next to the play area. If you connect the individual features of both magic features, you must remove any one of them and immediately place it on another feature according to its usual placement rules. [5]

Note: When you move a magic figure, you do it before 2. Placing a meeple and before 3. Scoring a feature.

2. Placing a meeple

You may place a meeple on an unoccupied feature as usual, even if there is the mage or the witch on it.

Both magic figures are neutral figures.

3. Scoring a feature

When someone completed a feature with a magic figure on it, you modify the scoring of that feature as follows:

  • With the mage on it, each tile of that feature (coats of arms do not count) scores 1 additional point.
  • With the witch on it, you score half the total points you would usually score for the completion of that feature (rounded up). This includes any points for coats of arms, cathedrals, etc.
Example 1: Usually, this city would score 20 points ( (8 tiles and 2 coats of arms) x 2 points = 10 x 2 points). However, thanks to the mage, you and the blue player each score 28 points (20 points as usual for the city + 8 bonus points for the tiles thanks to the mage).
Example 2: You placed this tile that completed two roads. The road on the right would usually score 5 points (5 tiles x 1 point), but because of the witch, Blue scores only 3 points for it (half of 5, rounded up). The road on the left scores 6 points thanks to the mage ( (3 tiles x 1 point for the road) + (3 tiles x 1 point for the mage) = 3 + 3 points).

After scoring a feature with a magic figure, remove the figure and place it next to play area. [6]

Final Scoring

In the final scoring, you modify the scoring of features with magic figures on them, just as during the game.

Other expansions

If playing with other expansions, please take the following notes into consideration:

General Comments:

Interpretation from the Community The mage considers the number of actual tiles in the feature. It does not consider any tile count modifiers:
  • Dutch churches (Dutch Churches Dutch Churches): segments on Dutch churches are not counted multiple times if connected to the same road.
  • German cathedrals (German Cathedrals German Cathedrals): segments on German cathedrals are not counted multiple times if connected to the same road.
  • Scoring tiles (The Land Surveyors The Land Surveyors): affecting the tile count for roads (Highway) or cities (Bad Neighborhood) are not considered to compute the mage bonus.

Interpretation from the Community The witch penalty only affects the worth of the feature associated with its tiles and coats of arms:

The witch will not affect any points associated to bonuses applied to the feature:

Exp. 1 - Inns & CathedralsExp. 1 - Inns & Cathedrals

Interpretation from the Community When scoring a road with an inn or a city with a cathedral that also has the witch, the feature's points are calculated taking into account the inn or cathedral and then cut in half. [7]

Exp. 3 - Dragon & FairyExp. 3 - Dragon & Fairy

Interpretation from the Community The magic figures are not eaten by the dragon, since they are neutral figures. The dragon can only eat meeples.

Exp. 8 - Castles & BridgesExp. 8 - Castles & Bridges

Interpretation from the Community A bridge per se does not count as a tile for the mage. A tile with a bridge will count for the mage bonus as any normal tile.
Interpretation from the Community The bridge bonus is not affected by the witch.

  1. Interpretation from the Community This means that if you complete a city or road with a tile featuring the magic symbol, you cannot place a magic figure on that city or road, since it is no longer incomplete. The tile placement completed the feature before a magic figure could be placed on it.
  2. Interpretation from the Community The magic figures can be placed on any tile in the playing area, including the tile just placed, as long as the restrictions in the rules are met.
  3. Official clarification from the publisher If the mage or witch is already on a tile and is moved due to placement of a tile with the magic symbol, the figure must be moved to a different feature. (5/2014)
  4. Official clarification from the publisher Thus: 1) If neither figure is in play, you bring one into play. 2) If both magic figures are in play, you move one of them to a different feature. 3) If only one figure is in play, you choose one or the other to move – you may move either the figure that is already in play or the figure that began the turn off of the playing field. In all of these situations, you may choose to move either the mage or the witch. (updated 5/2014; corrected 3/2020)
  5. Interpretation from the Community The chosen magic figure must be moved to another uncompleted road or city on any tile in the playing area (it could be the same tile where the figure was placed but on a different feature). If the movement is not possible, the magic figure will be put aside for later use.
  6. Interpretation from the Community The next time another tile with a magic symbol is placed, this figure can be placed again.
  7. Notorious rule difference among editions or publishers This additional rules clarification is from the Big Box 4 Big Box 4 and Big Box 7 Big Box 7 editions of the rules. It was included in the main text in the Big Box 6 Big Box 6 edition of the rules.
