Treasure awaits those bold enough to search for it... if they can decipher The Treasure Maps!
General info
The Treasure Maps is a fan-expansion for
Carcassonne Base Game created by Carcassonne Central forum member MMike (CarcC).
Contents
- 1 index card representing the treasure and their value
- 5 cards representing treasure maps
- 2 cards representing blank treasure maps
Rules
Preparation
- Decide how treasure values will be handled:
- Either use the assign fixed amount from the index card, or
- Use a base value plus one or more dice rolls (e.g., 10 + 2d6).
- Shuffle the Treasure Map cards and place them face down in a stack within reach of all players.
Gameplay
1. Placing a tile
There are no tiles supplied with this expansion.
2. Placing a meeple
After placing a tile, you may place a meeple or special figure on it, following the standard rules, or go treasure hunting!
- You can have only 1 Treasure Maps at the time
- You may look at your Treasure Map at any time, but do not reveal it to other players until you're attempting a discovery
- Treasure Maps can be purchased or sold only at tile features that may have libraries or markets, such as:
Anybody can become a Treasure Hunter!
If you don't own a map, you may choose to send one of your follower (any normal meeple or special figure) to purchase a Treasure Map instead of placing them on the tile:
- Draw the top Treasure Map card and place it face down in front of you.
- Place the chosen figure on the card. That figure is now a Treasure Hunter and is no longer considered to have its original role.
or
Sell a Map
If you lose confidence in your map-reading skills, you can sell your map for a small reward:
When you draw and place a tile with the features specified in the section above, you may, instead of continuing the hunt:
- Return the Treasure Hunter to your supply — it regains its original role.
- You immediately score 5 points.
- Shuffle your Treasure Map back into the map deck.
If you think you have located the treasure:
Find the “X”
Compare the tile layout on the board with the configuration shown on your Treasure Map:
- The map depicts tile arrangements including features (roads, cities, monasteries) in specific positions and orientations.
- Dashed lines and the X represent tiles that must exist on the table, but the dashed lines must be continuous (no gaps).
- Tiles do not need to be newly placed — they can be from previous turns.
During your wood placement phase, if the correct configuration is visible on the board, you may:
- Place your Treasure Hunter figure on the tile where the X appears on your map.
- Then, reveal the Treasure Map card to all players:
- If the location is correct:
- You gain the treasure points!
- Discard the map.
- Return the Treasure Hunter to your supply — it regains its original role.
- If the location is incorrect:
- Take back the map and the Treasure Hunter.
- You may try again on a future turn.
- If the location is correct:
3. Scoring a feature
Score complete feature following the standard rules.
Final Scoring
If at the end of the game you have an used Treasure Map, earn 2 points
