General info and comments

Expansion symbol

The Bards of Carcassonne fan-expansion was released by Carcassonne Central member Trebuchet.

Bards visiting Carcassonne are welcome guests, for their melodic rhymes based on folksongs and poetry from the past entertain the young and old, the rich and poor.

Contents

  • 7 new land tiles featuring a lute icon (Lute tiles).
  • 7 new tokens with note symbol (Note tokens).

Rules

Preparation

The new tiles are shuffled in with the old ones. The note tokens are put aside. These tokens are not owned by anyone.

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

When a player draws a Lute tile (featuring the lute icon), that player places that tile as per normal rules.
The player must first take a note token and place it on any unoccupied feature on the Lute tile. The note tokens can be placed on all features including fields.

When a token cannot be placed because all features are occupied, the tile must be placed elsewhere on the map.

Example: Red places note token on the unoccupied city segment.

2. Placing a meeple

The player whose turn it is, may place a follower as per normal rules after the note token is placed. However, a follower cannot be placed on that same feature where the note token has just been placed. [1]

When a note token can only be placed on one remaining unoccupied feature (this can occur after joining the tile to occupied features), a follower cannot be placed on the tile.

3. Scoring a feature

Cities:
Completed cities with (a) note token(s) score 1 more point per token per tile than usual. E.g.:
A completed city with 1 note token earns the player 3 points per tile.
A completed city with 2 note tokens earns the player 4 points per tile.
Note: more tokens: more points (+ 1)

Roads:
Completed roads with (a) note token(s) 1 more point per token per tile than usual. E.g.:
A completed road with 1 note token earns the player 2 points per tile.
A completed road with 2 note tokens earns the player 3 points per tile.
Note: more tokens: more points (+ 1)

Final Scoring

Fields:
Completed cities bordering a field with a note token on it score 1 extra point per token per city than as per normal rules. When playing with pigs and farms the extra point is to be added to the total. Note: more tokens: more points (+ 1).

Unfinished cities and roads:
Unfinished cities and roads with a note token on one of the tiles score no points at the end of the game.
The tokens themselves earn no points.

  1. Official clarification from the publisher Player may not place his follower as a knight on a city if the note token was placed on that city segment, he may not place his follower as a thief on the road if the note token was placed on that road and he may not place his follower as a farmer on a field when the note token was placed on that particular field.
