The Snakes and Ladders mini expansion contains just 1 scoreboard featuring snakes and ladders. During your journey across the Carcassonne scoreboard you will meet friendly people who will help you up the ladders. But be careful, there are also dangerous snakes that will eat you and set you back in the points race.

Carcassonne meets Snakes & Ladders. This mini-expansion combines two classic games and changes the dynamics of scoring in a whole new way.

General info and comments

Expansion symbol

The Snakes and Ladders for Carcassonne Base Game Carcassonne Base Game was released as a sticker for the scoreboard by Hans im Glück in 2024. You could get the sticker alone or already stuck to the back of a regular scoreboard of the 3rd edition (C3 for short).

This expansion doesn't exist for the 1st edition (C1 for short) or the 2nd edition (C2 for short).

It was originally announced as an April's Fool prank, as a replacement for the standard scoreboard with the addition of some rules. After a good reception by fans, it became an official mini expansion.

Contents

  • 1 Snakes and Ladders scoreboard
Snakes And Ladders scoreboard
It depicts several ladders and snakes that will change the position on scoring figures during a game:
  • Ladders: 1 --> 27, 16 --> 34, 32 --> 42
  • Snakes: 13 --> 6, 31 --> 22, 39 --> 11, 48 --> 26

Rules

Preparation

Use the Snakes and Ladders scoreboard instead of the usual one. Then, as usual, you place a meeple from each player on the 0 space.

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

Whenever you draw a tile, place it normally.

2. Placing a meeple

You may place a meeple according to the usual rules.

3. Scoring a feature

As in the basic game, you score the points you receive in the game on this scoreboard. However, there are some special spaces where the scoring meeples are moved.

  • On spaces 1, 16 and 32, you'll find the bottom of a ladder. This is marked by a person.
  • On spaces 13, 31, 39 and 48, you'll find the head of a snake.

After you have scored everything, you look on the scoreboard where the scoring meeples are.

  • If a scoring meeple is at the bottom of a ladder, it climbs "up" and is now at the end of the ladder.
  • If a scoring meeple is at the head of a snake, it is "eaten" and moves to the end of the snake's tail.
Example: After the players completed their scorings this turn, their scoring meeples ended up in the spaces shown in the picture. Some of them will be affected by the snakes and the ladders.
  • Red is on the 16 space. The player's scoring meeple climbs "up" the ladder. Now it is on the 34 space.
  • Blue is on the 39 space and is "eaten" by the snake. You move the scoring meeple back to the 11 space.
  • Green is on the 27 space. Nothing happens on this space, so the scoring meeple simply stays there.
Final Scoring

At the end of the game, do the final scoring as usual. Ignore all snakes and ladders.

General Comments:

Interpretation from the Community The effect of the snakes and ladders should be taken into consideration at the end of the turn after all scorings are completed in 3. Scoring a feature. If playing with expansions, this should take place:
