The Courier (Fan Expansion)

The Courier introduces a new neutral figure that follows diagonally or horizontally placed meeples on the board. If your meeple was placed on an unfinished feature and was not scored this turn, you may receive a thank you message and score points for that unfinished element as a bonus.

There are many abandoned roads, towns or monasteries and gardens. The Courier brings good news to those who decide to improve these places.

Rules

Preparation

Tiles variant

Shuffle the new landscape tiles in with the rest of the tiles and stack them normally. Place the Courier to the side for now - it doesn't belong to any player.

No tiles variant

Place the Courier to starting tile.

Example 0: The Courier placed on starting tile

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

Tiles variant

After placing a tile with a letter symbol, immediately move the Courier figure to it, regardless of where it is currently located.

Example 1: You place tile with letter symbol and move the Courier to the placed tile.
2. Placing a meeple

You may place a meeple according to the usual rules.

3. Scoring a feature

The Currier figure and a letter symbol does not affect scoring of finished features.

4. End of turn - The Courier Move - Receiving a thank-you message

Both variants

If the player's meeple, placed in this turn, meets all of the following conditions:

  1. stands at the end of the turn in an unfinished feature such as a city, road, monastery, or garden
  2. stands on a tile with the Courier OR stands horizontally or vertically to the tile on which the Courier stands,

then the Courier figure is moved to that meeple and the player receives a thank-you message from the Courier for the unfinished feature, which score you points as in the final scoring of the game.

A farmer placed in a field cannot receive a message from the Courier because he is on a feature that cannot be completed and scored during the game.

Example 2: Blue placed a meeple on an unoccupied and unfinished city as a knight, and the Courier stands vertically away from him. He satisfies the condition for receiving a thank-you message from the Courier. The Courier moves to the knight, Blue receives a thank-you message from the Courier and scores 4 points for the unfinished city.

 General rules

When playing No tile variant place the Courier on very first tile placed on board.
If more than one Meeple (e.g. Normal Meeple, Large Meeple, Abbot, Mayor, Wagon, Ringmaster, Phantom, Guard Meeple...) has been placed or moved in a turn and meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message from the Courier, then the Courier moves to whichever Meeple was placed or moved first, and that player receives a thank-you message from the Courier, even if this player is not the active player.
The Courier is moved even if the Meeple meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message and would score 0 points, e.g. an incomplete city with a Cathedral   Inns & Cathedrals.

A Meeple placed on a feature that can be completed and scored during the game can receive a message from the Courier.
Also, a Meeple moved on the game board from one feature to another can receive a message from the Courier.
A Meeple placed on a larger tile (double tile, etc) can meet the condition for receiving a thank-you message when at least one part of a feature on tile where a Meeple is placed is horizontally or vertically to the tile on which the Courier stands.

A Meeple placed on a feature that cannot be completed or scored during the game cannot receive a message from the Courier.
A meeple moved on the same feature during the game cannot receive a message from the Courier.
Support figures (e.g. Builder, Pig, Shepherd, etc.) and neutral figures (e.g. Fairy, Dragon, etc.) cannot receive a message from the Courier.
