Doris Matthäus was born in 1963 in Erlangen. She studied graphic design in Nuremberg. Through the game designs of her husband Frank Nestel, she began illustrating games. They live together with their son Jari in Erlangen where they run the publishing house of "Spiele von Doris und Frank" together. She has illustrated many games and is one of the most renowned illustrators in the game industry.
Doris was the illustrator for the original Carcassonne artwork (aka C1).
