Preamble

The Lords of Carcassonne reside at their Castles for as long as can be remembered. Their status does not only become apparent by the scale of their houses, but also by the length of their Castle roads. The longer a Castle road, the more status for the Lord.

The Castle Lords fan-expansion was released by Carcassonne Central member Trebuchet. Rules revisited by members of Carcassonne Central.

Castle or road: Castle is part of road. Meeple can be placed only on Field or on Castle

Rules

Preparation

Shuffle the Castle Lords tiles together with the land tiles of the basic game.

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

When a player draws a Castle Lord tile, that player places that tile as per normal rules.

2. Placing a meeple

After placing a Castle Lord tile, you can place your meeple

  1. on the field, as usual,
    or
  2. on the Castle. He must try and make the Castle Road as long as possible for scoring.[1].

Example 1: Red places his follower on the Castle. The road leading to the castle is now a Castle Road and thus occupied by red.

Note 1: Placement to road is not allowed, because road is part of Castle road. Note 2: Rules for meeple placement for Castle road as same as for regular Road. Only difference is that meeple placed as Castle Lord on it's Castle occupies also Castle road.

3. Scoring a feature

A Castle Road is completed according to standard rules of Road.

Castle Lord scores Castle road 1 point for the Castle Road tile itself. Each joining tile scores the player 1 point more than the previous tile based on length of road.

Highwayman on Castle road scores road by standard rules of Road - 1 point for each tile.

Example 2: Over the next turns red has managed to have the Castle Road extend over a length of 3 tiles. Red now plays the cloister tile and ends his road. As player has Castle Lord, then he scores 10 points - (1 + 2 + 3 + 4).
Final scoring

Uncompleted Castle roads are scored as per normal rules of Road at the end of the game.

  • Official clarification from the publisher Complete road with inn scores 2 points per tile itself. Castle road scores the player 2 points more than the previous tile when inn is involved.
  • Official clarification from the publisher During final scoring, incomplete Castle road with an inn on them do not score any points.

  • Interpretation from the Community Magic portal can be used for place meeple to road on Castle lord tile, when road is not occupied.

  • Interpretation from the Community When scoring a Castle, you scores full score for Castle Lord of Castle road only when in vicinity of Castle is Castle Lord tile. Otherwise you scores Castle road only as regular road.

  1. Official clarification from the publisher Even that Meeple is placed on Castle, road is also occupied by the same Meeple, because Castle is part of road. When Meeple placed on Castle, road becomes by a Castle road. For Castle road are user all rules for regular Road except scoring.
