General info and comments
Carcassonne Map-Chips was originally released by Hans im Glück in 2019.
It is a mini-expansion with different rules for each Carcassonne Map. In the case of Carcassonne Maps - Nordics, players can discover some Nordic highlights and explore them with the help of their tiles.
Contents
- 30 Map–Chips (10 each in purple, light blue, and orange.)
It is recommended to play with 115–125 tiles, e.g. from the BigBox: Base game (72) + 1. exp. (18) + Mini 4 to 7 (30) = 120 tiles.
Rules
Preparation
Use 2 of the 3 possible starting spaces of choice.
Shuffle all 30 Map-Chips face down. Then place two of them face-down on each marked space.
Gameplay
1. Placing a tile
Collecting chips
If you place your tile next to a pre-printed city, immediately take the map-chips lying there. It doesn’t matter whether you place a meeple or not. You get points immediately according to the numbers on the map-chips. Afterward, you put the chips in your personal supply.
Waves
Fields with wavy lines can be seen on the map. You can’t place a landscape tile on these spaces.
Discover Nordic highlights
You can’t place a land tile onto a highlight. But you can place any tile next to it. Like at a border square, all features are closed at the side of the highlight. When a highlight is discovered at one side, you can’t automatically place tiles at the other sides (unlike a printed city).
2. Placing a meeple
After you have placed the tile, you may place a meeple on it according to the usual rules.
3. Scoring a feature
If you are scoring a road, you can upgrade it, by using your map-chips. For every colour you use, you get 1 additional point per tile. You can use 1 chip per colour per scoring. Afterward, the used chips are removed from the game.
Every highlight is bordered with one of the 3 map-chip colours. Because of that, you will get 2 instead of 1 point for each tile of a road to a highlight. If you use map-chips with other colours, you get 1 more point per colour for each road tile. The colours which border the highlight can be used several times.
The ferries roads are counted, independent from their length, as 1 road tile and can be improved by map-chips as usual.
Final Scoring
At the end of the game, you can’t upgrade any of your roads, neither with chips nor by the highlights.
