The City Gates allow players to place a city gate on the edge of a tile to another city gate, but also to a road or to a field on the edge of tile, and vice versa. Players can easily complete their cities even if a tile with the desired configuration does not exist. And the shapes of the cities also allow the division of fields.

Rules

Preparation

At the start of the game, shuffle the new landscape tiles with the rest of the tiles.

Gameplay

1. Placing a tile

The tiles are placed following the basic rules of Carcassonne. Note the following special features:
On the side of a tile, on which there is a city gate, either a farm or a road may be placed.
It is also allowed to place another city gate. In this case, the 2 cities are not connected by the city gates.

Example: On this tile with 3 city gates all possibilities for placing are shown
1 At the left gate another city gate was built, but both parts of the city are separated
2 The lower gate borders on a farm
3 The right gate borders on a road
2. Placing a follower

The rules of the Carcassonne basic game apply to the placement of a follower. No followers are placed on the city gates on the edge of the tile. On the small farms next to the city gates, however, followers may be used as farmers.

3. Scoring a feature

The rules of the Carcassonne Basic Game apply to scoring during the game. It is important to know that a road is also limited by a city gate. This can lead to a finished road consisting of only 1 road section.

Example: On the left side, a city gate will be placed against the road. The road is now finished and Red gets 1 point for it.
CityGates C1 TileExplain 01.png
For this landscape tile with 4 city gates, the following different scoring applies: If the player places a follower in the city after placing the tile, a scoring takes place immediately, since the city is closed. The player receives 4 points and immediately takes his follower back into supply.
Punktacja końcowa

The rules of the Carcassonne basic game apply to the final scoring.

New landscape tiles

Tunnel Road: The road is not interrupted on this landscape tile. At the upper edge it separates the farm, at the lower edge it does not. [1]

On these two tiles, the city segments under the bridges are not interrupted. So there is always only one city segment under the bridge.

Overpassing City Bridge: On this tile as well, the city segment under the bridge is not interrupted. So there is always only one city segment under the bridge. The city segment with the pennant ends at the two farms at the lower edge, which are separated by the road. This is especially important for farmer scoring at the end of the game.

This tile is treated like the normal landscape tile with a monastery in the city. [2]

Tiny City: The city on this tile has a special scoring during the game (see above). [3]

Interpretacja społeczności If a player closes one of the ends of a road with a city gate, and his or her builder is on the road, the road does not get “extended” by the city gate, so the player is not granted a double turn. [4]

Rozszerzenie 5. - Opactwo i burmistrzRozszerzenie 5. - Opactwo i burmistrz

Interpretacja społeczności The abbey may also be placed at a city gate. Likewise, the wagon may drive through a city gate when moving, unless there is a farm at the city gate.

Rozszerzenie 8. - Mosty, zamki i bazaryRozszerzenie 8. - Mosty, zamki i bazary

Interpretacja społeczności The bridges from this extension can also be used in combination with the city gates. The city gates count like a piece of road. The following examples illustrate this:

Example 1: Blue placed the landscape tile with the city gate and put a follower on the city. Now he is allowed to build a bridge on the farms of the neighboring landscape tile, which starts at the city gate and leads across the city.
To the right of this bridge, a road or another city gate could be built or a new bridge could be built on a farm.
Example 2: Red has just placed the marked landscape tile and is now building a bridge on it. The bridge leads over the farm and Red connects the city gate with his road on the right landscape tile. The road is now finished and Red gets 2 points.

Rozszerzenie 9. - Owce i wzgórzaRozszerzenie 9. - Owce i wzgórza

Interpretacja społeczności The shepherd may also be placed in the small farms next to the city gates.

TunelTunel

Interpretacja społeczności If using the tunnel tokens from The Tunnel, then the road shown on the tile with a tunnel is indeed broken, and the segments may never actually meet.
