Base Game, Wheel of Fortune, and the tiles in Big Box 5 : differences

In the Base game of Carcassonne, there are 72 tiles. These tiles are standard across all instances of the Base Game (eg Second Edition, Winter Edition, plus copies of the Base Game included in the Limited Editions and Big Box Bundles (except Big Box 5, which will be discussed below)).

In Wheel of Fortune all of the tiles carry the wheel watermark although the special "value" tiles also have the full colour wheel symbol. As noted above Wheel of Fortune retains the standard count of 72 tiles, but discards and replaces 9 tiles with other tile layouts introduced from later expansions. Additionally, since it was intended that the Wheel was to be used as the starting piece for the game, the standard start tile is retained, but has been printed with a normal coloured back.

The tiles removed were:

The tiles added were:

19 tiles have the coloured numerical wheel, comprising 18 tiles from the standard base game, plus 1 of the tiles introduced from the other expansions - the "tennis ball" tile.

Big Box 5 contained the Base Game, the Wheel of Fortune expansion, and some other expansions. However, this did not mean two sets of broadly identical tiles. Instead, a combined set of tiles was included to allow the players to create the Base Game (set of tiles), or to create the Wheel of Fortune (set of tiles). This was achieved through the use of the wheel watermark on the new tiles added from other expansions into the standalone Wheel of Fortune, and a rule that stated that when using the Base Game (set of tiles) - some of which carried the numbered wheel symbol - the numbered wheel should be ignored.

Thus, in Big Box 5, the distribution of tiles is as follows:

  • Base Game : 55 tiles with no special markings
  • Base Game : 15 tiles with numbered (WoF) wheel symbol (no wheel watermark)
 1 (x4); 2 (x2); 3 (x1)
 1 (x3); 2 (x3); 3 (x1)
 1 (x1)
  • Base Game : 2 tiles with numbered (WoF) wheel symbol and wheel watermark
 1 (x2)
  • Wheel of Fortune : 8 tiles with wheel watermark (none of the tiles from the standard Carcassonne game)
  • Wheel of Fortune : 1 tile with numbered (WoF) wheel and wheel watermark
 1 (x1)

wolnic: The above is a first draft and I'm not 100% comfortable with the numbers of each, so need to spend some more time on it with justabill's article, CundCo tile list, etc.
