Tile with letter symbol
Rules
Preparation
Shuffle the new landscape tiles in with the rest of the tiles and stack them normally. Place the Courier to the side for now - it doesn't belong to any player.
Place the Courier to starting tile.
Example 0: The Courier placed on starting tile
Gameplay
After placing a tile with a letter symbol, immediately move the Courier figure to it, regardless of where it is currently located.
Example 1: You place tile with letter symbol and move the Courier to the placed tile.
You may place a meeple according to the usual rules.
The Currier figure and a letter symbol does not affect scoring of finished features.
If the player's meeple, placed in this turn, meets all of the following conditions:
- stands at the end of the turn on the board
- stands on a tile with the Courier OR stands horizontally or vertically to the tile on which the Courier stands,
then the Courier figure is moved to that meeple and the player receives a thank-you message from the Courier for the unfinished feature, which score you points as in the final scoring of the game all features than can be completed and scored during the game and that have at least one meeple of any player in an area of 9 tiles (9 square spaces) around the courier.
The courier can be moved to the farmer, but you can not get points for a field, because he is on a feature that cannot be completed and scored during the game.
Example 2: Red places a meeple on an unoccupied and unfinished city as a knight. The Courier is positioned on the board, standing vertically away from
Red's 's knight.
Red knight fulfills the condition to receive a thank-you message from the Courier. The Courier moves to the knight, and
Red receives a thank-you message from the Courier.
Red scores a total of 9 points, which are calculated from the final scoring value of all unfinished features that have a meeple in any tile surrounding the Courier, regardless of the majority on the feature. This includes 4 points for a city occupied by
Blue knight, 3 points for the city occupied by
Red knight, and 2 points for a road occupied by
Red highwayman. The
Yellow farmer is not considered because fields do not score during the game.

1. Introduction
This Expansion Selector allows you to pick what expansions (or parts of them) to use in the reference pages of WICA. According to your selection, the Order of Play and Scoring sections will be adapted. This way, you can customize WICA to suit your game without any hinderance from the expansions left out.
As hinted above, the expansions combining multiple elements permit a fine-grain selection of its elements. For example, you can choose the abbey tiles and the wagon from "Abbey & Mayor" and to leave out the barn and the mayor.
2. Use Guide
The selector has several tabs and below there is an area that lists the current selection at all times, no matter the tab displayed.
You can click on any tab label to go to the desired tab. Additional clicks on a selected tab will collapse it and expand it back in order to access the selector when needed. Switching to another tab will expand the selector automatically.
The following sections describe the tabs and their functionality.
2.1. "Expansions" tabs
The first three (or four) tabs from the left allow you to pick expansions in full or partially when possible.
- Major expansions: lists all official major expansions by HiG.
- Minor expansions: lists all official minor expansions by HiG and some of their licensed equivalents.
- Other expansions: lists the rest of licensed and unofficial expansions as well as those Print & Play and Cut & Play expansions released by HiG.
- Fan expansions: lists some fan-made expansions. This tab may not be available in some cases.
These tabs show a listing of expansions where each label is preceded by a checkbox to allow its selection and deselection if full.
Those expansions with various components show a clickable "[+]" symbol after them when closed or "[–]" when open. In the latter case, all the components are displayed and can be selected and deselected individually.
Each tab has a text label in accordance with the format "Group (X/Y)" in order to identify the set of expansions listed (indicated by Group), the number of expansions selected (represented by X) and the total number available (represented by Y).
2.2. "Quick Selectors" tab
This is the fourth tab from the left. It allows you to choose from a predefined list of available expansions sets. This tab contains the following elements:
- A dropdown list and a "Select Expansions" button: They allow you select and load a predefined expansion bundle, such as a Big Box or all the expansions for the New Edition.
- The "Clear All" button empties your current with one click.
- The "Select All" button selects all the expansions available with one click.
2.3. "Filters" tab
This is the fifth tab from the left. It allows you to choose what Carcassonne editions are displayed and your preferred edition. The editions considered are the 1st Edition (C1), the New Edition (C2+C3), and the Winter Edition (WE), which is included in a creative way if some of its expansions are of interest.
The tab displays two panels:
- "Show Editions" panel: it contains a checkbox for each edition available (C1, C2+C3 and WE.) The selector will show the expansions belonging to the checked editions only. For example, if the 1st edition (C1) checkbox is selected, expansions such as "The Wheel Of Fortune" or "Halflings" will be eligible in the Expansion Selector, otherwise they will not be available for selection. At least one edition has to be selected, thus they cannot be deselected at the same time.
- "Preferred Edition" panel: it contains a set of radio buttons for the 1st Edition (C1), the New Edition (C2+C3) and the Winter Edition. The radio button selected will indicate the Expansion Selector which edition has precedence over the other when:
- Describing the Game Reference, the Order of Play, the Scoring rules and Game Figures: If there are differences between editions, the preferred edition rules and wording will be displayed. For example, the movement of the dragon will be displayed in different steps in the Order of Play depending on whether C1 or C2+C3 is selected.
- Displaying graphics in the Scoring sections: For expansions available in both editions, the images shown will correspond to the selected edition. Images from an expansion only existing in one edition will not change.
The radio button for an edition will be enabled only if such an edition is available, that is, it is selected in the "Show Editions" panel.
It also includes a checkbox with the label "Mark rules adaptations": If checked, all the rules displayed in the Game Reference, the Order of Play, and the Game Figures not corresponding to the preferred edition will be highlighted.
This tab shows a label similar to "Filters (C1/C2+C3/WE) #" that lists all the editions selected in parentheses and one of them is underlined, indicating that it is the preferred one. The hash sign "#" is present if rules adaptations are highlighted.
2.4. Help
This is the current tab displayed with help information about the Expansion Selector.
Expansion selector requires JavaScript.
Preparing expansion selector...
General rules
When playing No tile variant place the Courier on very first tile placed on board.
If more than one meeple (e.g. Normal Meeple, Large Meeple, Abbot, Mayor, Wagon, Ringmaster, Phantom, Guard Meeple...) has been placed or moved in a turn and meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message from the Courier, then the Courier moves to whichever meeple was placed or moved first, and that player receives a thank-you message from the Courier, even if this player is not the active player.
The Courier is moved even if the meeple meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message and would score 0 points, e.g. an incomplete city with a Cathedral Inns & Cathedrals.
A meeple moved on the game board from one feature to another can receive a message from the Courier.
A meeple placed on a larger tile (double tile, etc) can meet the condition for receiving a thank-you message when at least one part of a feature on tile where a meeple is placed is horizontally or vertically to the tile on which the Courier stands.
Player can not get points for features that cannot be completed or scored during the game and/or are not scored during final scoring by receiving a thank-you message from the Courier.
Special figures (e.g. Builder, Pig, Shepherd, etc.) and neutral figures (e.g. Fairy, Dragon, etc.) cannot receive a thank-you message from the Courier.
Exp. 5 - Abbey & Mayor
A Wagon moved from a finished feature meeting the condition for receiving a thank-you message can receive it only if it is the first meeple placed/moved this turn which meets the condition.
Exp. 7 - The Catapult
The Courier is moved if the meeple meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message after Catapult action.
Exp. 8 - Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
A meeple placed on a castle can meet the condition for receiving a thank-you message when a meeple is placed this turn and the Courier is horizontal or vertical to at least tile part of the castle token.
The Courier is moved if the meeple meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message before bazaar auction.
20th Anniversary Expansion
A meeple placed next to another of your previously placed meeples meeting the condition for receiving a thank-you message can receive it.
Castles in Germany
A meeple placed on a German Castle can also meet the condition for receiving a thank-you message when at least one part of a German Castle is horizontally or vertically adjacent to the tile on which the Courier stands.
Example German Castles 1: You place a German Castles tile and place a
yellow meeple on the German Castle. As the German Castle is situated on both parts of the Double tile, the
Yellow meeple can receive a thank-you message.
Example German Castles 2: You place a tile on the right side, adjacent to the bottom half of the double tile, and
you place a meeple on the unfinished city. The
red meeple is on a feature which is horizontally or vertically adjacent to the feature on the tile on which the Courier stands. The
Red meeple meets the condition for receiving a thank-you message.
Example German Castles 3: The Courier is located on a city that is only on the top half of a double tile.
You place a tile on the right side, adjacent to the bottom half of the double tile, and
you place a meeple on the unfinished city. Because the
red meeple is on a feature that is not horizontally or vertically adjacent to the tile on which the Courier stands,
Red cannot receive a thank-you message.
The Plague
A meeple moved on the same feature after taking a flight can receive a thank-you message from the Courier.
Fan Expansions
Black Dragon
The Black Dragon can eat the Courier, which can then only return to the game by placing another tile with the letter symbol. In No tile variant is the Courier placed in next turn immediately after placement of tile in 1. Placing a tile phase.
Rules history
- * 04/2024 Movement of the Courier was placed between the Catapult action and the Bazaar auction. Player can get Message when playing C2 rules.
- * 04/2024 The scoring of the thank-you message has been changed. Previously, points were only awarded if the courier was located on a specific feature. Now, points will be awarded for any feature with at least one meeple within a 9-tile (or 9-square space) radius of the courier.
- * 03/2023 Fixed conditions for receiving a thank-you message and a new rule to put the Courier figure back into play when it is eaten by a Dragon The Princess & the Dragon or Black Dragon and a No tiles variant is played.
