Revision as of 20:32, 9 February 2024
With this mini-expansion you can score additional points when you finish a street. To do this, you have to steer the course of the road as the signposts show you.
General info and comments
The Signposts was released by Hans im Glück in 2021.
This expansion has cities with clipped buildings.
This expansion has been developed for the Carcassonne basic game. All the basic game rules still apply in addition to the expansion rules below. You can combine it with other expansions - but at your own risk – that is, there will be no official rules for these combinations.
Contents
- 12 new land tiles, each depicting 2 of 3 different types of signposts:
Rules
Preparation
Shuffle the 12 tiles of this mini expansion together with the other land tiles.
Gameplay
1. Placing a tile
Draw a land tile and place it according to the rules of the base game.
2. Placing a meeple
You may place a meeple on the tile just placed. [1]
3. Scoring a feature
When completing a road, check if there are signposts next to it. If that is the case, in addition to the points of the road you also score points for each signpost pointing in the right direction. [2]
For a signpost to be pointing in the right direction, the following requirements have to be fulfilled:
- The course of the road on the next tile has to follow the direction indicated by the signpost (left turn, right turn or straight ahead).
- The road must not end on the first tile after the signpost.
How to count the signposts:
- Count the signposts showing the correct course of the road on the road you want to score.
- From these, count the number of different types of signposts.
You may score:
- Only one 1 type of signpost: 1 point for each correct signpost.
- 2 different types of signposts: 2 points for each correct signpost.
- All 3 different types of signposts: 3 points for each correct signpost.
You do not receive points for signposts that do not show the correct course of the road.
Final Scoring
At the end of the game you receive 1 point for each signpost on your roads, pointing in the right direction. The different types of signposts do not matter at this point.
Other expansions
This section contains additional information about the interactions with other Carcassonne expansions.
The rules assume the signpost condition is met if a road segment connects the edge of the signpost to the required edge on the adjacent tile. If the road segment ends on the tile before touching the required edge or does not touch it at all, the signpost condition is not met.
In general terms, the road segment must connect the required edges to meet the conditions, but this connection may happen to include other features that provide this connection on the tile beyond a simple printed road on the tile.
The signpost requirements will apply to roads on Halfling tiles (Halflings) and double-sized tiles (the river source in the 20th Anniversary River, the German castles in Castles in Germany or the tiles in The Markets of Leipzig). The signposts requirements applied to a road segment on square tiles should also apply to a road on Halflings, following a few considerations:
- A road connecting two edges on one Hafling tile should meet the same conditions as if it was a square tile.
- A road spanning across two triangular tiles should be considered as a road segment on a square tile to meet the signpost condition.
- A road ending at a feature or at a triangular gap will not meet the conditions for any signpost.
The signposts requirements applied to a road segment on a square tile should also apply to a road on a double-sized tile, with the following considerations:
- A road ending on one half of a double-sized tile will not meet the conditions for any signpost.
- A long road on a Leipzig tile is considered as one road segment ending on the tile, so it will not meet the condition for any signpost.
The extra points scored for the correct signposts is a feature-level scoring modifier the same as the points scored for:
- Bathhouses (The Barber-Surgeons)
- German castles (Castles in Germany)
- Labyrinth with advanced rules (The Labyrinth)
- Little Buildings (Little Buildings)
These points will be added to the feature after applying other scoring modifiers such as:
- Inns (Exp. 1 - Inns & Cathedrals)
- German cathedrals (Cathedrals in Germany)
- Mage and Witch (Mini #5 - Mage & Witch).
The points for the correct signposts are part of the total scoring for the feature, the same as the other feature-level scoring modifiers. These points are not a separate scoring event when considering the following cases:
- A castle scoring (Exp. 8 - Bridges, Castles & Bazaars)
- Messages #1 and #8 scoring points for a road (Mini #2 - The Messengers)
- A Robber stealing points from a road scoring (Mini #6 - The Robbers)
Any signpost on an road edge connected to an abbey tile will be considered in an incorrect position.
Exp. 8 - Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
Signposts consider a bridge as a straight road segment.
Messages #1 and #8 will take the signposts into consideration when scoring a road (1 point per correct signpost, as if scoring after the game).
The Wainwrights quarter bonus is not affected by signposts.
The long road segments on the Leipzig tiles end on the double-sized tile, so they will not meet the requirements for any signpost.
The road segments on the German castle tiles end on the double-sized tile, so they will not meet the requirements for any signpost.
Template:GermanyCathedralsLink
Roads ending at a German cathedral will receive extra points for the correct signpost on the road.
An archbishop will not score extra points for the correct signpost on the road ending at the German cathedral.
Two triangular tiles sharing the same square space will be considered as one regular tile regarding signposts, so those roads running across both tiles will be considered as a road on a square tile.
The road segment on the double-sized river source tile ends on tile, so it will not meet the requirements for any signpost.
The Road Sweeper gift card will take the signposts into consideration when scoring a road (1 point per correct signpost, as if scoring after the game).
